SUMMARY:Study Day 'Envisioning the Afterlife: Dante and the Irish Visionary Tradition'
DESCRIPTION:Envisioning the Afterlife: Dante and the Irish Visionary Tradition \nStudy Day \n20 May 2024 \nThe Council Room\, University College Cork\, & online \n  \nThis study day\, organised by the UCC Centre for Dante Studies in Ireland\, focuses on the medieval Irish vision tradition and its relationship with the Commedia\, Dante Alighieri’s fourteenth-century poetic vision of the afterlife. \nIn collaboration with specialists in literature\, theology\, cosmology\, history\, and textual transmission\, we aim to examine the particularity of medieval Irish literary visions and their ‘insular’ features\, while also considering their extraordinary European circulation\, especially the influence that works such as the Visio Tnugdali and Navigatio Sancti Brendani had in Italy\, where they were copied\, translated\, and transformed. Despite the relatively high number of surviving manuscripts of these Latin and vernacular texts\, the Irish visionary tradition has received little attention among Dante scholars\, and its direct or indirect impact on late medieval Italy is yet to be fully explored. \nThis study day brings the Italian and the Irish literary traditions into dialogue via Dante in a way that appreciates their distinctiveness\, while also recognising the commonalities they have in answering questions central to the medieval – and possibly modern – understanding of the self: namely\, how can one be present to other realities than those immediately evident to our senses? How do writers invite readers to partake in their extraordinary visionary experiences? And how is our understanding of the miraculous and the supernatural in vision literature shaped by genre expectations and social\, cultural\, philosophical\, and theological contexts of transmission? \nIn addition to hosting senior specialists and early-career scholars from Ireland\, Italy\, Hungary\, and the UK\, this study day draws upon existing research strengths at the UCC Department of Early and Medieval Irish and especially the project ‘De Finibus: Christian Representations of the Afterlife in Medieval Ireland\,’ which resulted in the two-volume collection The End and Beyond: Medieval Irish Eschatology (2014). \nProfessor John Carey (UCC) will deliver a keynote on (dis)embodiment and (im)materiality in visionary experience\, concentrating mainly on Irish texts\, but also considering sources shared by Dante and the Irish\, notably Visio Sancti Pauli and Gregory the Great’s Dialogues.

SUMMARY:Translation as Position-Taking in the Literary Field
DESCRIPTION:Translation as Position-Taking in the Literary Field. Agents and institutions of translated literature in Italy and of Italian literature abroad (20th and 21st Century) \n———— \nThe aim of the conference is to foster critical discussion on translated literature as part of the target literature\, by focusing on literary institutions (publishing houses\, book series\, journals) and agents (translators\, literary agents\, editors)\, and the composite sociocultural factors driving the selection\, production\, and publication of literary translations. “Calling into question the politics of canonisation and moving resolutely away from ideas of universal literary greatness”(Bassnett and Trivedi 1999)\, we are particularly interested in social categories of writers who have been dismissed by literary critics who insisted on “the autonomy of the aesthetic” (Bloom 1994); in other words\, writers who challenge the ‘Western canon’. \nThe conference aims to explore the mechanisms of reception\, dissemination\, recognition and popularisation in the Italian literary system of foreign literature. This will include literature by women authors in translation\, by feminist translators\, authors from non-hegemonic/non-central languages\, non-white\, minoritarian and marginalised authors/groups and collectives. We are also interested in similar mechanisms by which Italian literature is translated and received beyond Italy. \nKeynote lectures will be delivered by Cecilia Schwartz (Stockholm University\, Sweden)\, Jacob Blakesley (University of Leeds\, UK)\, and Susan Bassnett (University of Glasgow/University of Warwick\, UK). SUMMARY:SIS Themed Conference 2020: Visions of Italy
DESCRIPTION:Society for Italian Studies Themed Conference \nVisions of Italy \nUniversity of Kent\, 10-11 September 2020 \n  \nPopular conceptions of Italy typically revolve around the visual: the beauty of its landscapes and its historic legacy of fine art and architecture. This dates back at least to the medieval period\, and the innovations of artists such as Giotto and visionary writers like Dante. In the twentieth century\, it is in the fields of cinema\, photography\, art\, fashion and design that Italy has had the most marked impact around the world. Concurrently\, Italy has also been a favoured subject of visual representation: from Grand Tour photographic albums to mainstream Hollywood films set in Italy\, there is no lack of foreign representations of the country and its inhabitants. \n  \nThis conference will explore Italian visual culture\, Italy’s relationship with the visual and the way in which Italy and Italians have been depicted. It aims to further a dialogue among scholars in the field of Italian studies who deal with visual culture in the broadest sense\, from studies of visual arts and objects to literary works characterized by an emphasis on the visual. \n  \nWe welcome proposals for papers or pre-constituted panels (of three papers) on topics such as: \n\nCinema and photography;\nVisual arts of all eras\, from Medieval and Rennaissance to contemporary art;\nFashion and design;\nAdvertising and visual culture;\nIntermediality and cross-media representation;\nVisual representations of Italians and Italian culture abroad (e.g. Italian-Americans\, the diaspora\, etc);\nVisual representations of migration to and within Italy;\nTranscultural representations of Italy and Italians;\nEkphrasis and visual culture in Italian literature;\nVisualisation within\, and of\, the work of medieval and early modern authors (e.g. Dante\, Boccaccio\, Petrarca).\n\n  \nKeynote Speaker: Prof. Stephen Gundle \n  \nPapers may be delivered in either English or Italian \n  \nFor individual papers\, please send a 200-word abstract and a 100-word bio. \nFor panels\, please send a 200-word rationale plus 100-word abstracts and 100-word bios for each paper in the panel. In putting together a panel\, you should take into account the SIS policy on gender equality (copied at the foot of this CFP). \nProposals should be emailed to both conference organisers (a.p.marlow-mann@kent.ac.uk  and a.sforza-tarabochia@kent.ac.uk) by 31st January 2020. \n  \nSIS Gender Policy \nConferences and events organised by the SIS will respect the following norms: \n\nas far as possible there will be a balance in the number of male/female speakers and session chairs;\nsingle-sex panels will be avoided wherever possible;\npanel chairs will be briefed on how to ensure inclusive and balanced discussion;\nwhere there is more than one keynote speaker efforts will be made to ensure gender balance.\n\n  \nAlex and Alvise

SUMMARY:Women in Sardinia: Creativity and Self-Expression - temporarily cancelled
DESCRIPTION:  \nEnglish version \nThis interdisciplinary conference aims to explore the role of women in Sardinian culture and society from the Middle Ages to the present day\, with an emphasis on the concepts of creativity and self-expression\, intended not only in literary\, cultural and artistic forms\, but also in daily practices and contexts. A central geographical area in the Mediterranean Sea\, surrounded by an enduring archaic and mythical aura\, Sardinia is a privileged space to examine the contradictions between pre-established gender roles and the emergence of extraordinary female figures\, from the great giudicessa Eleanor of Arborea (1347-1404) to the Nobel prize winner in literature Grazia Deledda (1871-1936)\, the only woman who received this recognition in Italy to date. \nGrazia Deledda evocatively defined Sardinia as the “Cinderella of Italy\, still waiting for her fairy godmother to discover her and take her out of the obscurity in which she lives”. This unjustly neglected Italian region has witnessed a rising wave of imaginative women writers in the twentieth century\, including Maria Giacobbe (1928-)\, Bianca Piztorno (1942-)\, Milena Agus (1959-)\, Michela Murgia (1972-). As recently as 2019\, several cultural events in Italy celebrated the centenary of Maria Lai’s birth (1919-2013)\, another distinguished artist from Sardinia\, whose sculptures\, canvases and “sewn fairy tales” speak of and to women’s creative self-expressions across time and space. \nAlongside such renowned female figures\, numerous unknown women contributed to build up the unique and multifaceted character of this island\, by blurring in everyday life the boundary between the secluded world of their households and the public sphere\, and challenging their own worlds with small but bold acts of disobedience to the established order. By unravelling the unexplored threads between prominent female figures and those who did not make their way in the official history of this region\, this conference seeks also to acknowledge the forms of creativity and self-expression that lesser-known women resorted to in a variety of social and cultural contexts. \nWe invite papers that explore the nexuses between women\, creativity\, self-expression and Sardinian culture in their multifarious facets. Proposals may include\, but are not limited to\, women’s role in Sardinian literature\, both as writers and as fictional characters\, in oral traditions\, visual arts\, education\, law\, everyday public and domestic spheres\, beyond chronological boundaries\, as well as in a comparative perspective with other cultural contexts. \n  \nInstructions and deadlines for proposals \nWe welcome submissions of both individual papers and proposals for panels: \n\nIndividual paper proposals for 20-minute presentations should consist of a title\, an abstract (max. 300 words) and a short biographical note.\nPanels should consist of three papers and each proposal should include a title\, the names of the chair and the speakers\, abstracts (max. 300 words each) and a short biographical note of the\n\nThe working languages of the conference are English and Italian. Abstract and panel proposals can be sent either in English or in Italian. \nPlease submit your proposal for either a paper or a panel to the conference organisers Sara Delmedico (sd683@cam.ac.uk) and Elena Emma Sottilotta (ees45@cam.ac.uk)\, University of Cambridge\, Italian Section. \nThe deadline for submission of paper/panel proposals is 30 March 2020. Notification of inclusion in the conference will be sent by 20 April 2020. DESCRIPTION:The next Postgraduate Colloquium  ‘Minorities Report. Italian Culture\, Facing Otherness’ \nwill be held on 29 November 2019 at the University of Durham. \nThe Colloquium will provide an opportunity for postgraduate students to discuss the extent to which multi-vocality has had an impact on Italian Studies so far\, the direction in which our disciplinary field is moving and its role in an ever-changing national and global context. \nProf Loredana Polezzi (Cardiff University)\, an expert in the fields of translation studies\, comparative literature\, and history of travel and migration\, will deliver a keynote lecture in the morning. She will propose an intersectional approach to the concept of minority intermingled with the experience of feminine migration. In the afternoon\, Dr Guido Furci (Durham University – Sorbonne Nouvelle)\, with his strong knowledge of minorities’ voices and juridical statuses\, will explore forms of ‘indirect witnessing’ and ‘intrusive memory’ in the context of Italian contemporary literature. \n

SUMMARY:La più bella del mondo – The most beautiful in the world
DESCRIPTION:12 talks on the Italian language \n“The most beautiful in the world” is supposed to be a supermodel and yet in Italy the expression is more often than not used to define Italian language. SUMMARY:Interart/intermedia experimentation through the ages (from the medieval age to the present)
DESCRIPTION:The programme of the conference will be available soon.\n\nIn collaboration with \nSchool of Modern Languages\, Literatures and Cultures\, Royal Holloway\nSchool of Languages\, Literatures and Cultural Studies\, Trinity College Dublin\nSchool of European Languages\, Culture and Society\, UCL\nAHRC project “Interdisciplinary Italy” (www.interdisciplinaryitaly.org)\nAHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council)\nOrganisers: Clodagh Brook\, Florian Mussgnug\, Giuliana Pieri\, Emanuela Patti. \n \nDescription: \nThis conference explores interartistic and intermedial encounters in Italy and the new kinds of experimentation that arise from these. It will focus attention on individuals and groups who are actively engaged in creative boundary-crossing and on institutions who fostered or hindered interartistic and intermedial exchange. It may subvert widely accepted canons as what looks central under the lens of the monodisciplinary microscope may not be so from an interartistic one.\n \nWe welcome proposals from established scholars\, early career researchers\, and PhD students from all disciplines.\n \nTopics may include\, but are not limited to:\n \n1. Interartistic and intermedial\, experimentation and creativity.\nHow does intermedial and interartistic practice work to enhance creativity? What are its links with experimentation? Why does it arise?\n \n2. Mapping and rewriting the cultural canon\nHow does looking at artists and artworks from an intermedial/interartistic perspective reshape the map of what is central and what is peripheral? Which artists have been lost to cultural histories because their work falls into the interstices between the arts?\n \n3. Historical change\nHow has working between two or more arts has been received or marginalised across the ages? What is instrumental in this change? Why does this take place? What kind of interartistic practice is taking place in medieval Italy\, in the Renaissance or later? Are there particular periods in Italy’s history in which explosions of interartistic practice take place and why?\n \n4. Boundary crossing\nHow are borders between the arts policed and why? How have institutions in Italy played a part in shaping what fits\, or does not\, in certain artistic tradition? How do we best investigate the process of dialogue/translation/remediation involved in border crossings between the arts?\n \n5. Collaboration and communities\nHow might interartistic and intermedial practice bring artists together? Why do groups come together and how?  How does the collaborative making of artworks across boundaries differ from solitary practice? How might transmedia practice – and the fandom associated with it – make us think differently about readers and about artistic and literary communities?\n \n6. Theories of interartistic practice and intermediality\nHow has thinking in Italy contributed to the international debate on intermediality and on interartistic practice?\n \n7. Bad practice …\nHow does intermedial and interartistic practice threaten the stability of artistic forms and disciplines? Are there negative implications to be considered? What are the risks and dangers of intermedia?\n \nThe main goal of this conference is to look at Italian culture from an intermedial perspective (rather than a multimedial\, or multiartistic one) to understand how the bringing together of two or more art forms\, or two or more artists working across art forms have changed creative production in Italy\, and indeed beyond\, from the medieval age to the present. We plan to publish selected papers from the conference in an edited volume.

SUMMARY:Jhumpa Lahiri in Conversation with Nicola Gardini
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nBlackwell’s is thrilled to announce this forthcoming event: \nPulitzer Prize winning author\, Jhumpa Lahiri\, in conversation with writer and translator\, Nicola Gardini\, on her latest role as editor of The Penguin Book of Italian Short Stories. \nWhen Jhumpa Lahiri decided to read exclusively in Italian\, a language she had studied for many years\, her life as a reader – and writer – took a surprising turn. Complete immersion in this rich literary heritage brought fresh insight and unexpected freedom. \nThis collection brings together forty writers who have shaped her love of the Italian language and profound appreciation for its literature. More than half of the stories featured in this volume have been translated into English for the first time and the wide ranging selection includes well known authors such as Italo Calvino\, Elsa Morante and Luigi Pirandello\, alongside many captivating rediscoveries. \nPoets\, journalists\, visual artists\, musicians\, editors\, critics\, teachers\, scientists\, politicians\, translators: the writers that inhabit these pages represent a dynamic cross section of Italian society. Together they reflect over a hundred years of Italy’s vibrant and diverse short story tradition\, their powerful voices resonating through regional landscapes\, private passions and the dramatic political events of the twentieth century. The first anthology of its kind\, over half of the stories in this collection appear translated into English for the first time. \nJhumpa Lahiri is the author of four works of fiction: Interpreter of Maladies\, The Namesake\, Unaccustomed Earth\, and The Lowland\, which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize\, the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award. She has received numerous awards\, including the Pulitzer Prize\, the PEN/Hemingway Award\, the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award\, the Premio Gregor von Rezzori\, the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature\, a 2014 National Humanities Medal\, awarded by President Barack Obama\, and the Premio Internazionale Viareggio-Versilia for In altre parole. \nNicola Gardini is a poet\, novelist\, columnist and translator. He has a PhD in Comparative Literature at New York University and is now a Professor of Italian and Comparative Literature at Keble College\, Oxford. \nThe event will be chaired by Elena Lombardi\, fellow of Balliol College and Chair of the Department of Italian at Oxford University.\n \nTickets for this event cost £5. Doors will open at 6.45pm\, at which time there will be a small bar available to purchase drinks.
