The Society for Italian Studies is seeking to elect its first Postdoctoral Fellow for the academic year 2025-26. The Fellowship will provide funding for one year to enable the successful candidate to work on turning their PhD thesis on an Italianist topic into a book, hosted by a UK or Irish Italian Department of their choice. Details of the fellowship, application process, remuneration and eligibility can be found below.

· The Fellowship will provide funding for one candidate for one year to work on turning their PhD thesis into a book during the academic year 2025-26.

· Funding will be aligned with the AHRC PhD maintenance stipend (currently £19,237, or £21,237 for candidates in London). For candidates moving to a different UK or Irish institution, a contribution to relocation costs of £500 will be offered.

· Payment will be made directly to the candidate in two instalments. The candidate is responsible for payment of any tax and for seeking professional advice in that regard.

· The candidate will be hosted by a UK or Irish Italian Department and will need to be granted non-stipendiary visiting status (along with email, IT, library access).

· We will expect the candidate to be present at their host institution during the period of the Fellowship whenever possible, and to adhere to any relevant visa or residency conditions. Candidates should confirm that they are eligible to reside in the country of their host institution or are eligible to apply for a Graduate Visa, as appropriate.

· The Head of Department or equivalent of the proposed host department should provide a 500-word supporting statement, explaining how the Fellow will be mentored and accommodated into the life of the host department.

· Only one application can be supported by each department. Departments will be responsible for deciding which application they will support. It is advisable for candidates to contact their potential host department at the earliest opportunity.

· The applicant will need to have successfully completed their PhD viva (and had any corrections signed off) at a UK or Irish university no earlier than 9 May 2023.

· Applicants should submit a project description and publication plans (max 1,000 words); the host support statement (max 500 words, signed and on headed paper); and a two-page CV. The project description should aim to make a strong case for the contribution of the book will make to Italian Studies. Details of two referees should also be provided.

· References of no more than 500 words will only be sought from shortlisted candidates and do not need to be submitted at the point of application.

· All application documents should be submitted by email to the SIS Secretary, Chiara Giuliani, at chiara.giuliani@ucc.ie

· The deadline for applications is Friday 9 May at 12 noon. We aim to announce the successful candidate by Friday 6 June. We would expect the successful candidate to hold their fellowship for 12 months from September or October 2025.
